Citrus is one of Arizona's 5 C's, or the five major agricultural and natural resource contributors to the state's early economy (the others being copper, cattle, climate, and cotton).
The valley's bright sun and arid soil are perfect for growing citrus fruits, so groves of oranges, tangerines, lemons, and grapefruit sprung up along the state's canal system beginning in the late 1800s. Many original citrus grove trees still remain in areas like Scottsdale and Arcadia today.
